Lulasclan

Lulasclan is an ode to Africa,

It encompasses the magic and beauty of Africa through unique and contemporary textiles & pieces that all come together to feel like a piece of HOME.

Creating this home, which I call Lulasclan, was about creating a safe space for self-expression, embracing the bold, celebrating my love and appreciation for Africa, a place I also call home. It is about all the emotions  and feelings that are conjured up by this word “home” that I wanted to  capture, asking myself the question what does home feel like to you?, home  is so many things, feels like so many things too, it is the moments, the  memories, the comfort, the stories, the travels, it is personal, but it welcomes  everybody, and this is what I wanted to create a home of African  contemporary design that welcomes everybody to feel at home, to carry a  piece of home where ever they may go.

Founded in 2016, what started as a small scatter cushion business, has evolved into a Textile & Product  Design Studio, home to the South African Textile Artist and Designer Bonolo Chepape, who’s story starts with a love for patterns, art and design, cultivated and nurtured in a small dusty mining town of Rustenburg, North West, South Africa. Lulasclan was built on the core values of family, and an imprinted notion of “a family works together to realize each other's dreams, in order to pave a way for the future lineage and to create a place where everyone can call home”.

Anna Chepape (Mother) & Tshupi Letsie (Aunt) are the matriarchs of the Chepape Clan who have helped and contributed in the building and support of the brand at its early start-up phase. The self-taught seamstresses with a natural appetite for entrepreneurship, jumped on board when the idea of Lulasclan was born. Rolling up their sleeves to take charge of the vision and consistently uttering the  words “ we are doing this for all of you” a statement that Bonolo knew very well and the underlying  message and impact of it, that it’s about everyone, and bringing everyone along, it's about making a  way, shifting the course, breaking the chains and learning new ways of doing things.

Seven Years later the business has grown and employed talented seamstresses alongside working with independent local CMT’s & product manufacturers. Working along-side talented female run agencies in photography or raising talents in fashion & modeling, Lulasclan hopes to create platforms where talents from various fields can come together with a purpose of creating meaningful work that is beautiful and brings everyone together.

Our process involves sourcing quality base fabrics from local fabric suppliers and using digital printing technology that uses eco-solvent inks to transfer our designs. Our perfectionism and attention to detail has been informed by design learnings and experience. Pushing ourselves to grow, to perfect and to evolve with every piece we create.
