Small Jemima 10 Cows Bolga Basket
by Baba Tree
In Bolgatanga, when a marriage takes place, part of the dowry is 2 cows. In the midst of a workshop organized for 20 weavers to travel to The National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, India, Artisan Weaver Jemima Akolgo was asked how many cows it would take if she was proposed to. With a sly look she said "10 cows" which brought the house down with laughter. Jemima was the first to weave this particular style, hence the name Jemima 10 cows.

Please note that these baskets can be easily reshaped by immersing your basket in cool water, holding the basket in the water for 60 seconds. Pull the basket out of the water, shaking off excess water. Let the basket sit for a couple of minutes to allow the water to penetrate the straw. Push the basket back into shape. Allow to dry, undisturbed, out of the sun in a dry space.
