December Mission of the Month

  • by Emily Charette

The donation was made possible from the $1 sign ups to our newsletter that we have committed to doing each month.  (we will be switching out our mission monthly).  Today Mandy (our team member in Cape Town) had the privilege of distributing new book bags and books to the students at Capricorn Primary School in the Western Cape townships.  The Capricorn Primary school is run on donations serving under privileged children in the Western Cape townships.  The school was in desperate need to books and school supplies so we partnered with the Life Matters Organization and went to work in purchasing new books and book bags for the students.  Jill from Jam Tarts (one of our artisans featured on our website) made the book bags for the children and we purchased new books to fill the bags.

LIFE MATTERS FOUNDATION CAPE TOWN SOUTH AFRICA

The LifeMatters Foundation was established in 2002 by Meadowridge Baptist Connect Church to serve the youth of the greater Constantiaberg area in relevant ways.

The LifeMatters Foundation is passionate about making a difference to disadvantaged and at-risk Primary School learners.

Their mission,

Is to provide holistic support in the form of academic and life skills intervention so that all children are intellectually, emotionally, socially, physically and spiritually equipped to reach their full potential and become active citizens.

Their values, We believe:

  •  That God has a plan and a purpose for each person’s life

  •  That hope drives purpose

  •  That it is our responsibility to advocate for children’s rights

  •  That active citizenship transforms communities

  •  That all people deserve respect

  •  That diversity should be celebrated

  •  That equity is the first step towards restoration

  •  That integrity and honesty is the foundation of all relationships

We approached Life Matters Foundation as our December Mission of the Month, to see how we could contribute to their cause. We got in touch with Sharleen Haupt, the Academic Porfolio Manager and discussed which area we could be of assistance. Sharleen mentioned since Covid hit, they noticed a shortage of books, as returned books go into a 'no touch' box for several days for sanitization and then with more learners borrowing books from us than ever before, they realized there was a desperate need of picture and reading books.

So we approached our lovely and very willing vendor Jill from ‘Jam Tarts’, to design and make 50 book bags which we bought 50 new books to go inside.
We feel very blessed and humbled to be part of a Foundation such as Life Matters where the staff give back, making every child reach their full potential, and delightful that we could be of assistance to the learners at Capricorn Primary.

Learners, all of us at Ithemba Creations hope you enjoy the many hours of reading adventures and remember as Dr Seuss once said’ The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.’
